New employment firm helps offenders, local businesses

New employment firm helps offenders, local businesses

Terry Williams has a love for former prison inmates. She believes in them so much that, in an economy that is less than robust, she just launched an employment firm – Little Rock-based Ramoth, Inc. – to help recently released Arkansas and Louisiana inmates find jobs.

Though it’s a unique concept, Williams said she doesn’t consider it a risk.

That’s because when it comes to ex-inmates, Williams is an expert. The daughter of a police officer and wife of the City of Maumelle, Ark.’s police chief, she has decades of experience working as the director of faith-based halfway houses for federal inmates called City of Faith. Based in Louisiana and Little Rock, Williams’ programs have put thousands of former federal prisoners to work – successfully.  Now she is hoping to help state-level offenders find jobs.

Foodbank Awards Equipment Worth $160,000 to Hunger Agencies

LITTLE ROCK, AR --  The Arkansas Foodbank has awarded $160,000 worth of freezers, walk-in coolers, shelving, pallet jacks and other warehouse equipment  to church food pantries and other hunger agencies that use the Foodbank as a source of supplies to help them improve their capacity for helping the hungry.

The grants were announced by CEO Phyllis Haynes and Dianne Williams,  the Foodbank’s Chief Program Officer.

The vans are a continuation of infrastructure improvements that were funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation following the construction of the Foodbank’s new Reynolds-funded Donald W. Reynolds Distribution Center, the new 70,000-sq.-ft. Foodbank warehouse that opened a year ago at 4301 W. 65th St. in Little Rock.

Salvation Army seeks 'angel' sponsors for kids

Salvation Army seeks 'angel' sponsors for kids

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – April 9, 2012 -  Hiking in the woods, making crafts, singing songs by the campfire, -- some of our fondest childhood memories come from summer camp.

For the neediest children in central Arkansas these simple joys seem unattainable. These at-risk kids will spend their summer wandering the mean streets or hanging out with other idle kids… a recipe for trouble!

But The Salvation Army can help struggling local families avoid this outcome for their children. Last year in the United States, thousands of children attended some 48 Salvation Army residential camps. "It's an experience not to be missed," observes Central Arkansas Salvation Army Area Commander Major Jim Taylor. "Time spent at camp can be a life-changing experience for kids. It can instill feelings of self-worth, open up the world and offer hope for the future."

McTeacher Night is a nationwide event and is a fundraiser for the school.  McDonalds will donate 20 percent of profit during that timeframe to the school.  Last year, McDonalds donated $538 to the school, which bought a popcorn machine.

Teachers will be doing everything from working the cash registers to frying up fries.
